Bus-iness not as usual: creating the trolleybus grid of the future

The BEST Course in Spring 2022 is titled “Bus-iness not as usual: creating the trolleybus grid of the future” and will start on the 24th of April and last until 4th of May.

It is a great chance to discover a new field -sustainable transportation- or further address a known one while exploring an incredible European city, Delft!

The topic offered this year focuses on the simultaneous use of different types of green energy in order to produce a transportation system of the future

A little bit about… Delft

Old church and Delft's skyline

Welcome to the Netherlands and to the website of BEST Delft’s BEST Course in Spring 2022! This website contains general information about the course. During our course, you will not only experience the studious atmosphere of TU Delft, but also the typical Dutch life in Delft. Delft is probably one of the most historical sights in Europe with its picturesque Grachten and smell of Stroopwafels all over town!

Main Square of Delft (Markt)

Delft is a municipality in the Netherlands. It is located in the province of South Holland, situated north of Rotterdam and south of the The Hague. Delft is known for its historic town centre with canals, Delft Blue pottery, the Delft University of Technology, painter Johannes Vermeer, scientist Antony van Leeuwenhoek, and its association with the royal House of Orange-Nassau.

Aula of TU Delft

TU Delft, the major university in Delft, is situated in the southern part of the city and boasts collaborations with a large number of other educational and research institutes within the Netherlands and abroad. It has a reputation for high-quality teaching and research with extensive contacts with governments, trade organisations, consultancies, multiple industries, and companies of all sizes.

A little bit about.. The Course

Meet the PhD candidate that will be guiding your academic experience during the Course: Ibrahim Diab. He works in sustainable transportation and here is his view on how the BEST Course is going to look like:

The transport sector accounts for about 25% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and is the second fastest growing sector in that regard.

Green electric public transportation networks and personal electric vehicles are important elements of the transport landscape of the future and in fighting the climate crisis. However, creating each of these systems and powering them in a sustainable manner is not always technically and/or financially feasible. But combining them together, counter-intuitively, actually makes them achievable!

As a case study, this course will study the design of the smart and sustainable trolleybus network of the future – a network that is no longer just a load on the city grid, but an active, green player that can share (or even sometimes take over) supplying some extra city functionalities such as electric vehicles chargers. Through lectures, workshops, short design projects, and power flow calculations, the students will explore the various challenges and solutions of the transport networks of the future: the multi-functional grid with solar panels, wind turbines, storage systems, and electric vehicle chargers.
